What cortisol actually does

Cortisol is a stress hormone. It's not evil. It's essential. Your body produces cortisol every day to help you wake up, mobilize energy, respond to threats, and manage inflammation.

Normally, cortisol follows a predictable pattern: it peaks in the morning (to help you wake and get going), and it drops throughout the day, reaching its lowest point around midnight (so you can sleep). This is your cortisol rhythm, and it's controlled by your circadian clock.

What happens on night shifts

On a night shift, your cortisol rhythm doesn't immediately flip. Instead, you get a mismatch: your cortisol is still trying to peak in the morning when you're trying to sleep, and it's low at night when you need to stay alert. This creates stress on top of the sleep loss and fatigue you're already managing.

Over time, if the disruption is chronic and severe enough, cortisol rhythms can become flattened or dysregulated: the peak gets lower, the trough becomes higher, or the pattern becomes unpredictable. This is associated with worse sleep, more fatigue, increased inflammation, and mood problems.

What the research actually shows

The research on cortisol and shift work is consistent on this: chronic shift work that disrupts sleep is associated with cortisol dysregulation, which is associated with worse health outcomes. That's solid.

Where it gets murkier is the direct causation. Is elevated cortisol the cause of weight gain in shift workers, or is it the result of disrupted sleep, poor nutrition choices, and chronic stress? Probably both, but the exact relative contribution is hard to pin down.

What actually matters

The bigger point isn't that cortisol is uniquely evil. It's that your entire hormonal system is running against your sleep schedule. Cortisol is just one part of that. Melatonin, growth hormone, thyroid hormones, insulin sensitivity — they're all running against your actual sleep-wake cycle.

Fixing one hormone in isolation (like trying to "manage cortisol" with a specific supplement or workout time) misses the real problem: you're asking your whole body to run on a schedule it wasn't designed for.
